Explanations and Practice
1. We use phrases with 在zài to express position.
Main object + 在 + another object + place word
邮局在超市对面。 The post office is opposite the supermarket. |
超市在邮局后面。 The supermarket is behind the post office. |
2. 了 is a particle which can have many meanings. In this dialogue, it shows a change in situation: there’s been an accident, someone has been hurt.
3. Street names in China often end in 路 lù (“road”) or 街 jiē (“street”).
They also often include a direction word:
东 dōng (“east”)
南 nán (“south”)
西 xī (“west”)
北 běi (“north”)
The same street can have an “East” and a “West” part. This is because traditionally, Chinese cities were built in the form of a rectangular grid, with its sides facing the four cardinal points. In many cities, this order is still preserved to some extent.
4. In phone numbers, the number “1” is read as yāo.
