1. The particle 的 (de) is used to show possession.

我的书 wŏ de shūMy book
他的床 tā de chuáng His bed

It can be omitted between two people/things which are very closely related.

我（的）妈妈 wŏ de (māma) My mum

2. 在　is a verb which means “to be somewhere”.

他在中国。 Tā zài Zhōngguó. He is in China
我妈妈在英国。 Wŏ māma zài Yīngguó. My mum is in England.

To ask where something is we use 在哪儿？

他在哪儿？ Tā zài năr? Where is he?
你家在哪儿？ Nĭ jiā zài năr? Literally: Where is your home? Meaning “Where do you live?”

3. To ask about the number of people in the family, we use this question:

你家有几口人？ Nĭ jiā yŏu jĭ kŏu rén? 

The answer is:

我家有[number]口人。 Wŏ jiā yŏu [...] kŏu rén.

4. Look at this sentence:

她很聪明。Tā hěn cōngmíng.

The structure of the sentence is as follows:

Subject + 很+ adjective

Although the translation is “She is very clever”, there is no “is” in the Chinese sentence. That’s because the adjective takes the place of the verb here. In this case, “is” is not used, but 很 is used instead.

Zhè ... wŏ de jiā. Wŏ jiā yŏu wǔ kŏu rén – wŏ bàba, māma, jiějie, dìdi ... wŏ.
我们 是意大利人。我弟弟十五 ， 他 学生。
Wŏmen ... shì Yìdàlì rén. Wŏ dìdi shíwŭ ..., tā ... xuésheng.
他很懒。我姐姐三十二岁，她是老师。她 一个女儿，还 一个儿子。
Tā hěn lǎn. Wŏ jiějie sānshí’èr suì, tā shì lăoshī. Tā ... yī ge nǚ’ér, hái ... yī ge érzi.
我妈妈 是老师。她 聪明。我爸爸 工程师，他 能干。
Wŏ māma ... shì lăoshī. Tā ... cōngmíng. Wŏ bàba ... gōngchéngshī, tā ... nénggàn.
